Using Microsoft Excel for a Personal Budget
Most of us would agree that a critical part of any personal finance strategy is budgeting. If you’re going to consistently save money and move toward retirement, you have to use budgeting as a tool to get you there. Nobody will succeed at beating the money game without a strong personal finance budget.
So how are we supposed to create that type of budget?
Without question, the easiest and most effective tool in helping you create a wealth building budget is Microsoft Excel. With simple spreadsheet technology, Excel enables its users to customize a budget that will meet their needs. Following are a few reasons why Excel will help you create an effective budget:
1. Customizable: Microsoft Excel is fully-customizable; it allows its users to manipulate the size, fonts, colors, structure, and flow of a personal finance budget.
2. It’s FREE: That’s right- if you check your computer’s programs, you probably have a copy already. Excel won’t cost you monthly like many of the budgeting programs that are online today. And if you don’t currently have Microsoft Excel, sign up for Google Docs and use their spreadsheet- it’s just as effective.
3. Formulas: Excel (spreadsheets in general) allow you to use formulas that will help with your numbers. For example, if you’re looking to save 15% of your net income, you can put in a formula that will automatically come up with your target savings number, and that number will be placed in the appropriate expense column. If you don’t know the basics, there are tutorials online that can help you with these formulas. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide your budgets numbers in a way that will be easy to analyze.
4. Stays Organized: Rather that attempting to do your budget on paper, using Excel will keep things organized, neat, and clean.
Again, there’s no question that a budget is needed to beat the money game. Be wise and use Microsoft Excel as a key part of it!
